Testosterone Replacement Therapy: Why care about testosterone?
Testosterone levels today are lower than they were pre WW2, as society’s lifestyle has changed the decline on men’s testosterone continues to drop. Studies in the 1940’s showed the average testosterone level to be at 700 ng/dL. Studies in 1990s showed low end of normal levels of testosterone was around 400 ng/dL and high end of normal 1080 ng/dL, in today’s healthcare system we see levels 250-300 ng/dL as low end of normal and high end 850-900 ng/dL without accounting for the men’s age. The now defined normal reference range doesn’t mean you are functioning at optimal levels it means that you have fallen at a bell curve which has normalized a decreased standard deviation of testosterone throughout the years.
What causes this fall in testosterone levels compared to prior decades?
There are multiple factors affecting testosterone levels, from environmental toxins-phthalates- to the lifestyle men are living today- society as a whole is much less physical- which also means a lot less time spent outdoors which in turns translate to lower vit D levels which may boost testosterone levels. It’s important to know, however, that as men age natural testosterone levels also decline.
